NYC Moving Companies

Author: Seth Miller

There are a large number of professional moving companies operating all over New York City. The New York State Department Of Transport (NYSDOT), American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA), New York Mover's Organization and Better Business Bureau maintain lists containing their names. Reputable companies would be found on all these lists.

You should choose one that has licenses from all the relevant authorities like NYSDOT, the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) and the Department of Consumer Affairs. NYSDOT controls transporting within New York State, while the FHA regulates interstate operations.

Most moving companies handle both commercial and residential goods. They would handle a small consignment or large volumes. Their assistance starts with planning the move. Usually they provide vehicles with air-ride suspension and appropriate equipment, and services of expert packers and handlers. They normally supply packing materials like boxes, tapes and labels, but the cost would be charged to you.

Certain items like paintings require exclusive packing. Some offer specialized services like the transportation of valuable antiques, art pieces, pianos, computers and sensitive electronic goods. All their trucks have firefighting provisions and jerk-resistant padding and blankets.

A few transporters help to relocate household pets. They offer guidance on obtaining the required documentation, and arrange payment to the carrier, vet, quarantine facility or kennel. These would be in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act regulations.

The cost depends on various factors. For local moves the charges are by the hour. For long distance moves, volume, weight and distance are the main points considered. The company you choose should be able to give you a binding estimate, which includes the cost of packing materials, transportation and labor.

It would be wise to confirm in advance your insurance coverage and the moving company's policy regarding claims. Complaints can be reported to NYSDOT and AMSA.
