Poker What's Your Game?

Author: Jeff Lakie

Over the past year or so, poker has seen an incredible surge in popularity. And who can blame those who are so anxious to try their hand at one of the many variations of this game? After all, poker holds an undeniable attraction - different for different people.

No doubt, poker championships are both a result of the sudden popularity of this game and the result of that popularity. As more people become enthralled, more organized poker games are offered. From small town and neighborhood tournaments to the televised national championships, the fascination is easy to see. Those professional players attract fans, similarly to the following of popular racecar drivers. From apparel to playing styles, many amateur players base their moves on their professional favorites.

Texas Hold 'Em has become one of the most popular poker games in recent years, though there are lots of poker games. There's five card and seven card stud. There are poker games played with wild cards, no wild cards or wild cards that can only be used in specific cases.

The history of poker is a matter of debate. There are those who believe the roots of the game can be traced back centuries, while others think poker is a much more recent addition to ways people spend their leisure time.

Look at the role of poker in the American West. The games were notoriously dangerous and cheaters who got caught usually faced quick and brutal justice. Most people know the hand that Wild Bill Hicock was holding when he was fatally shot - aces over eights - and that the hand has become known as a dead man's hand.

Poker hasn't been ignored by the Internet. There are online poker sites that offer a myriad of options. You can play for points against other players or against computer players. You'll find entire chat room systems dedicated to the game and to the sharing of information.

Video games aren't just about shooting and racing. Poker video games are becoming increasingly popular as players vie against an array of computer characters.
