Ergonomic Chairs - Do You Need One?

Author: Magne Bjorklund

Often times if you are seated for a long period of time you will find that you have back pain, side pain, neck pain or perhaps you have pain in your legs. If you aren't working for a week, you find these pains will go away. However, if you continue to work, the pains seem to get worse. These are the symptoms of needing an ergonomic chair. Ergonomic chairs are the types that are going to give you the best support while sitting or working at a desk for an extended time. Ergonomic chairs are not really that expensive when compared to other types of office chairs and the added benefits you will receive from using ergonomic chairs.

If you don't know if you need an ergonomic chair, we have a few suggestions for you that will help you think about where you sit, how you sit, and to determine if you are feeling pain that is related to how you sit in your chair all the time.

First, does the chair seem to fit your body? Do you feel to big or too small for that chair? If your legs are hanging over the end of the chair and you are not able to reach the floor this is going to be bad for your circulation. If your legs are too long and you are not resting easily in the chair, you are too big for the chair. Not all chairs are created equally and no two bodies are same, these are things you must look at when you will be sitting in the same position all the time.

The chair that you are sitting at should have a soft cushion spot on the front of the chair where your knees hang down over the chair. If the chair is old and you feel as if your knees hurt all the time, this could be due to the chair cutting off the circulation in the back of your knees. It can be difficult to sit still all the time, but if you are not comfortable in the chair, it is not helping your situation at all.

A good chair, an ergonomic chair is going to be one that will adjust up and down to your needs and your leg length. Any type of adjustments to your personal body type will be good in the long run.

Another type of ergonomic chair that you can look for includes the small of your back being supported. While at first sitting, the ergonomic chair may seem to bulge into your lower back but this is the area that needs support, most people find their chairs are not ergonomic chairs not including the extra lower back support.
