Patient Care Technician Online Schools

Author: Michael Bustamante

Online Patient Care Technician Schools train students for providing personal care to patients in need of these services. Various titles are given to Patient Care Technicians, depending on the region in which they work. Certified Nursing Assistants, Certified Nursing Aides, Nurse's Aides, Home Health Aides, or Personal Care Assistants are all the same and do the same work. Online Patient Care Technician Schools offer programs titled accordingly.

Curriculums in Online Patient Care Technician programs will include courses in human anatomy and physiology; common conditions and illnesses; medical terminology; and communication skills. Most online schools require a high school diploma, preferably with courses in biology and chemistry. While Online Patient Care Technician studies are a beginning; practical hands-on experience may be required for completion of this program. Be sure to inquire at the Online Patient Care Technician School of choice whether or not this experience will be provided, and if certification or a degree is an option.

Patient Care Technicians are generally supervised by a registered nurse and provide patient care to young and old alike. Personal Care Technicians are found in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, adult day health centers, and in homes of clients. Patient Care Technicians are in constant contact with their patients and are the agencies for providing extensive daily care. All necessary information regarding their patients is provided by the Patient Care Technician to the supervising medical professionals.

Responsibilities of Patient Care Technicians include serving meals, taking and recording vital signs, dressing, bathing, toiletry, providing exercise, making beds and keeping the patient rooms in order, and attending to the general physical and mental wellbeing of their patients. A well-prepared Patient Care Technician will be compassionate, have a sense of humor, and be able to bring comfort, a sense of safety, and happiness to their patients.

Training programs for Patient Care Technicians are most often taught by registered nurses. Length of training depends on the school and the program. Classes are followed by a period of hands-on training, during which time the abilities and self-reliance of the patient care technician will improve with the daily routines of giving personal care to their patients.
